4. Nityanand Swami. The ever victorious Pandit
  Samvat Year 1832-1908 (1776-1852 AD)

Nityanand Swami was born of father Vishnu Sharma and mother Virjadevi in Datiya village of Lucknow district in Uttar Pradesh (Bundelkhand) in Vikram Samvat 1812. His childhood name was Dinmanisharma. As he was desirous of liberation he determined to carry on a search for directly manifested Purushottamnarayan. He firmly believed that the Lord and His saints do manifest in India. With this view he kept on the pilgrimage with Dwarika as his aim. In Visnagar he came to know that Lord Swaminarayan has manifested and presently adores Saurashtra region. He happened to have the Darshan of Shri Hari and threw himself at His feet. Realising that whom he was searching was right before him. He surrendered himself and became Shri Hari's disciple, and then he started on religious tour with Shri Hari. The Lord initiated him into Bhagawati Diksha and named him as Nityanand Swami in Meghpur (Saurashtra). Coming in contact with Narbheram Shastri he started regular study of the scriptures. He studied Vedanta and Nyaya systems of Indian philosophy. The 56-item-food festival was arranged by Vallabh Sampraday in Shrinagar (Ahmedabad) in Vikram Samvat 1886.

On that occasion more than 50 scholars of Vallabh Sampraday were present, Nityanandji also participated in the religious debate. By his sharp-witted arguments he proved that Swaminarayan Sampradaya is Vaishnav Sampraday. The scholars who opposed him through jealousy were defeated. By holding discussions with Shankaracharya in Chhoti Kashi (Umreth) he had established the Vedic approval and popular acceptance of Swaminarayan religion. He had defeated the Scholars in the royal court of Gaekwad-II in Vadodara in the discussions on Vedic scriptures.

Being the chief disciple of Lord Swaminarayan, Nityanand Swami was a leading saint and therefore he had handed over his footwear to Nityanandji before leaving for imperishable abode, Nityanand Swami got built a temple at Laxmi Vadi (Gadhada) where Shri Hari was cremated and placed the Padukas there for Darshan and worship. Any scholar of proceeding 200 years could not sustain before him such was his scholarship blessed by the Lord. He had written a volume entitled Shri Haridigvijay, Shri Hari Kavach, and Hanumat Kavach and endeared the Lord. He wrote Gujarati version of 'Shikshapatri', wrote Bhaktisutra on Shandilyasutra, Vaikunth Darshan, Kapilgeeta, and Ruchirashtak and gave great contribution in the compilation of 'Vachanamritam' the great scripture of the Holy Fellowship. He left for imperishable abode leaving his material body in Vadtal on 11th day of bright half of Margshirsh month of Vikram Samvat 1908. In order to commemorate this great saint marble monument has been set up at the spot of his cremation at Jnan Baug, Vadtal.
